THE BEST OF THE WEST FROM AROUND THE WORLD: The 2006 NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show

We’re now less than two weeks away from the premiere Reining event of the year! The 2006 NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show at the Oklahoma State Fair Park from November 23 – December 2, 2006. In this edition of the eNRHAnewsletter, we have important news about changes in the Futurity schedule, several new Futurity awards, exhibitor move-in, and a warning about a disease that could affect some horses coming to the Futurity.

Big Changes in the 2006 NRHA Futurity Schedule
The NRHA is announcing a change in its schedule for the 2006 NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships. The CRIO International Reining Challenge (IRC) presented by Frozen Partners set for Thursday, November 30 has been cancelled. Dan Wall, Executive Director of the NRHA says, “Having the World Equestrian Games and the FEI World Reining Masters Finals both this fall made it very difficult for riders to find horses and for countries to fund teams to get to the IRC. Therefore, in the best interest of the horses and riders, we decided to cancel the event.”

Now spectators will have two nights of freestyle competition in the North American Freestyle Championships presented by Century Investment Group! The North American Freestyle Non Pro Championship class will move to Thursday, November 30 and replace the IRC. The Freestyle Non Pro class will begin at 8:00 pm.

The North American Freestyle Open Championship class will remain on Friday, December 1 at 7:00 pm. Get your tickets early because both nights of the North American Freestyle Championship competition will sell out fast!

The NRHA Open Futurity Finals will remain on Saturday, December 2 at 6:00 pm.

2006 Denim & Diamonds Gala Cancelled:
Letter from Frank Costantini Jr., RHSF President

Dear 2006 RHSF Denim and Diamond Guests,

It is with deep regret and our most sincere apologies that the 2006 Gala has been canceled.

The necessity to cancel has come about due to the ongoing construction at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds and the building that the Reining Horse Sports Foundation anticipated being finished for the Gala not being done. Rather than in any way encumber our donors, sponsors and guests, the officers and staff of the Foundation felt it was in everyone's best interest to postpone the intended festivities until next year.

We regret any inconvenience that this decision has caused and know that it is ultimately in everyone's best interest.

Sincerely,

Frank Costantini Jr.
President RHSF

Foundation Administrator

Important Disease Alert for Futurity Bound Horses: Notice about EQUINE VIRAL ARTERITIS (EVA) from the Oklahoma Dept. of Agriculture, Food and Forestry
Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) is a disease of horses and donkeys. The virus is widely distributed among equidae populations throughout the world. Horses infected with EVA display a range of clinical signs from subclinical infection with no visible signs, “flu” like respiratory syndrome, abortion at any stage of pregnancy and pneumonia in neonatal foals. It can be accompanied by edema of the limbs and midline. Approximately 30– 60% of exposed stallions become persistently infected carriers and shed virus in semen.

EVA is a reportable disease.
There has been a recent outbreak in the Quarter Horse population stemming from a New Mexico breeding operation. Currently the State of Utah has multiple premises (breeding and performance) under quarantine.
    As of October 30, 2006:
  1. No equidae originating from an area under quarantine for EVA shall enter the State of Oklahoma.
  2. Equidae originating from a state with area(s) under quarantine for EVA shall:
    1. Be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) listing the body temperature of each equine which must be equal to or less than 101 degrees Fahrenheit; and
    2. The statement that “the animal(s) listed do not have any clinical signs associated with EVA, respiratory, or dependent edema and have not originated from an area under quarantine for EVA.”
Horses coming from Utah with CVIs written prior to the emergency order will be checked prior to unloading any horses. We also request that any incidence of respiratory disease during the Show be reported to the Show Veterinarian and/or the Office of the Oklahoma State Veterinarian. 405 522-6131 (office) or 405 812-7090 (cell)

NRHA Membership Reaches All-Time High!
The NRHA is proud to announce membership is at an all-time high! In late October, NRHA membership grew to more than 14,000 members around the world. And there are even more reiners joining every day. More than 10,000 members are from the USA. There are just over 1,000 Canadian members and close to 3,000 members worldwide including Europe, Africa, and even the Grand Cayman islands.

The Future of NRHA: Strategic Planning Committee Meeting Results
The Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) met recently in Dallas to map out its plan for the future of the NRHA. The SPC talked about a lot of exciting topics that would benefit its members and the sport of Reining worldwide.

The SPC has been charged to address key issues facing the NRHA and the sport of Reining. These issues include: growing the NRHA “Brand” and extending the visibility of the sport, examining the Board and committee structure, growing membership worldwide, and taking a hard look at the impact of the number of shows.

The SPC has a lot of work to do before it presents its recommendations to the full membership at the 2007 NRHA Convention in St. Louis, Missouri. The next SPC meeting is scheduled for December. Look for further updates.
