2007 NRHA Derby
The 2007 NRHA Derby is fast approaching. The Reining competition for four, five and six year old horses will be held May 14-19 at the Oklahoma State Fair Park. This year, the NRHA Derby offers more than one half million dollars in cash and prizes. Below you’ll find some important deadlines and fun events for the whole family at the NRHA Derby.

*Important 2007 NRHA Derby Deadlines
If you haven’t mailed in your 2007 NRHA Derby Nomination/Payment and Judges Fee – you’re running out of time! They must be postmarked by March 15th. If they’re postmarked after March 15th, you’ll need to pay a late fee. The final payment and video fee will be due on or before April 15th.

Another Derby Deadline involves consignments for the 2007 NRHA Markel Derby Spotlight Sale. Your consignments must be in by March 15th. At the Spotlight Sale, you can find yearlings, broodmares, two and three year olds and broke horses. If you would like more information, please contact Debbie Drinko at 405-946-7400, ext. 119, or ddrinko@nrha.com.

*Calling all Kids for Youth Day at the Derby
Come one, come all to the annual Youth Day at the NRHA Derby. Saturday, May 19th will be a fun-filled day for kids of all ages. You’ll find a Youth Judging Clinic, demonstrations by the Oklahoma City Mounted Police and agility dogs, a Reining demonstration with NRHA Professional John Horn and a Derby Block Party featuring a petting zoo, moonwalk, dunk tank, and a rock climbing wall. Everyone who attends the block party is encouraged to bring non-perishable food items. The NRHyA is holding a food drive to help benefit and bring awareness to the Oklahoma City Food Bank. All donations will be much appreciated.

The Youth Judging Clinic begins at 9:00 am and the Block Party kicks off at 1:00pm. The best news is – it’s all FREE! For more information, contact Supervisor of Youth Programs Mandy Kennedy at 405-946-7400, ext. 130, or mkennedy@nrha.com.

*Can We Borrow Your Horse For an Hour or Two?
The NRHA will again host the NRHA Collegiate Reining Championship competition at the 2007 NRHA Derby and we need your help. To carry out this competition, billed as the “Ultimate Catch Ride,” we need the use of 12-14 reining horses. Each rider will have 15 minutes to warm up on the borrowed horse and then compete with the other qualifiers in the Championship.

If you are interested in helping this great cause or know of someone who is, please contact Mandy Kennedy at 405-946-7400, ext 130, or mkennedy@nrha.com, or you can sign up in the Show Office at the Derby.

*Eat Like a King
While you’re at the NRHA Derby, don’t miss the “Taste of Reining” supporting the Reining Horse Sports Foundation (RHSF). The “Taste of Reining” features the scrumptious cuisine from a variety of Oklahoma City’s finest restaurants. For just $10 – payable at the door – you can eat like a king and help the RHSF at the same time. The “Taste of Reining” will be held Friday, May 18th at 5:00 p.m. in the Cantina.

Check the 2007 NRHA Derby page at NRHA.com for further updates!

Reining First for USEF Youth Competition
For the first time ever, young reiners can compete in the USEF 2007 North American Young Riders’ Championships (NAYRC) in Lexington, VA, July 31 – August 5, 2007. If you’re between 16-21 and a current United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) member you might be interested.

The qualifier for the Eastern region will be held at the Central Ohio Reining Horse Association Show in Sunbury, OH, on May 27th. The qualifier for the Western region has not yet been determined.

From those qualifiers, teams of four riders will be selected in each region by the USEF. Those four teams will then compete at the NAYRC in Lexington, VA.

NRHA Reiner – We Apologize
Recently the NRHA Reiner sent out a reminder asking if members/non-members had subscribed or renewed their NRHA Reiner subscription for 2007. Unfortunately this caused some confusion – we should have told subscribers to ignore the reminder if they had already subscribed or renewed for 2007. We sincerely apologize for the confusion.
